Located on the San Francisco Peninsula, next to the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay, the city's climate is mediterranean which results in wet winters and dry summers. Because of its location near two bodies of water, the city can get pretty foggy. The yearly precipitation is about 20.4 inches.
Earthquakes pose a real threat to San Francisco. The San Andreas Fault has caused major earthquakes in 1906 and 1986. The earthquake of 1906 devistated San Francisco with a magnituted of about 7.8.
There are several islands scattered around the San Francisco Bay, and they include Alcatraz, Angel Island, Treasure Island, Red Rock Island, Yerba Buena Island and the Alameda Island.
The city of San Francisco has over 50 hills. Mount Davidson, which is located at the geographical center of the city, is the highest hill with a 925 feet elevation. At the top of Mount Davidson lies a giant cross.
